Here's the advice I was given in my early business days:

  • Start a side hustle first
  • As a coach, do loads of pro-bono work
  • Never give away your time for free
  • You must do discovery calls to sign on clients

But no matter how common the advice, here's the truth:

The other person doesn’t know your business, your industry, your audience as well as you.

So if you're learning something new, but don't want to fall into the trap of receiving advice not tailored to you, here's what you could do instead:

  • Ask and listen to your audience and clients
  • If you do get advice, filter it through your own knowledge and experience
  • Listen to your intuition
  • Trust that you’ll figure it out in the end
